Hey buddies! I heard ya like chill tunes. Well look no further because we have a couple of Chicago bros, that make just that.

Supreme Cuts, comprised of Mike Perry and Austin Kjeultes, are here to offer you their newest album, ‘Whispers in the Dark’. To date, it is the most comprehensive collection of spacey-chill jams that I have found. All are rich with choppy vocal samples, gigantic drums, and drifting rhythms all laid upon a bed of hip-hop influence. Sound delicious? I thought so. Check out their album below or live on their tour opening for Polica. It’s pretty much the perfect album to put on, and leave on, while you sit and become one with nature.

Now unfortunately I’m going to be out of town for the weekend and I won’t be able to make it to their show this weekend. However, if you’re from the Portland area and not busy Saturday night, go check these guys out at the Wonder Ballroom and enjoy yourself!

I’ve always prided myself on listening to strange music and that trend isn’t going to change now.

It all started with me straying from mainstream grunge-rock music into punk…because 8th grade…fuck the system! Ya know? Then it moved to metal and hardcore where it stayed for a while before drifting slowly into many different electronic genres, where it is drifting yet again. With everyone talking about how ‘filthy’ their drops are, along with every idiot claiming that they are a DJ, I’m becoming really sick of this, ‘EDM’, scene. Insert my dark lord and savior, Johnny Love, or as he is better known nowadays; Deathface.

Deathface has once again melded my musical tastes into one, fucked up, multi-genre ear grind with his latest EP, ‘From Beneath’. This one is 8 tracks of angry, electronic, punk-metal that gets all violated by vocals from the newly added Effy (and I mean that in the sexiest possible way!). And then, when the album is over, it doesn’t even kiss you good-bye. You swear you’ll never listen to it again for what it did to you. But within hours, you come to terms with the fact that you love the abuse. You can’t quit now, so you play it again and again. You dirty, rotten slut!

So if you feel like listening to something incredible, that sounds like nothing you’ve ever heard, and may or may not take advantage of your young, fragile mind, I’d suggest you go and pick up the new album. It is out now on Trouble & Bass and you can listen to it below.

This show was a trip down memory lane for me! About three years ago, me and my one cohort, David, went to see The Hood Internet back in Cleveland (my hometown). The show was at a little basement club on the east side and there weren’t a whole lot of people there aside from the regulars. This was the show that made me decide that I was going to start bringing my camera to cover live events and add that to this glorious web-site. Over time, this became my favorite way to contribute and now look at us; top music website ever…no? Oh ok. Well regardless, I love going to live shows and was beyond excited to be covering my first show in the big city of Portland!

The evening started how all shows I go to start; by arriving way too early and standing around wondering where everyone else is. Normally, I would have sat around and had a thousand beers waiting for the show to begin, but hey, this isn’t the east side of Cleveland anymore. There are things to do here in North Portland. Which was inevitably spicy mac n cheese and a few beers.

After eating some beers, we headed back to Mississippi Studios just in time to check out Psalm One from motherfucking Chicago. Not even once, have I witnessed a more entertaining unexpected hip-hop performance. The playfulness and ferocity of Psalm One was something everyone should witness. She had the entire club deeply immersed into the music and even managed to keep my attention deficit ass glued to the stage for the entirety of the set. It was a damn good start to a great evening!

And now for the act that I came here to see; The Hood Internet. Mash-up champions of the world? Probably…but this time they’re touring in support of their upcoming album of originals, ‘FEAT’, due out September 18th on Defcon (preview below). However, that didn’t stop the constant flow of well-thought-out dream collaborations that were served up to the crowd at Mississippi Studios last Friday. And while only having half of the members of The Hood Internet, STV SLV just tore through an hour and a half of great tracks. The end result was the stage being rushed by about 10-15 women for an unsolicited dance competition. Now that’s how you end a show!
