While trying to keep up with the happenings in Cleveland, I found that The Big Pink were playing with A Place to Bury Strangers at my favorite venue, the Grog Shop. Yes, I went! Before attending shows I like to check who the openers are and since I knew the two big names already, it was time to check out this ‘Hot Cha Cha’ band. So, I listened to one of their songs on their Myspace page, heard some potential, and I went ahead and bought their debut album, ‘The Worlds Hardest Working Telescope and the Violent Birth of Stars’. I had all intentions to listen to the album before the show but my intentions did not match up with what actually happened (my day job got in the way). Needless to say, I went into this show only hearing a few songs and knowing nothing of the band except that they were from Cleveland. Now normally when I see or hear an all girl group, I will think to myself, “This is a really good girl band!”, or, “This is a mediocre girl band.” When I saw Hot Cha Cha however, I said to myself, “This is a really good band!” The word, ‘girl’, never even entered my vocabulary…even though they were, in fact, girls who were right before my eyes. Hot Cha Cha were the first band that I’ve seen in a while that really seemed to have fun on stage, and that was refreshing! They put on a phenomenal performance that kept my attention through the duration of the set. I was blown away!

After witnessing Hot Cha Cha’s superb live performance, I figured that their album would also be great. Hey, guess what!? It is! ‘The World’s Hardest Working Telescope and the Violent Birth of Stars,’ captures the energy and fun of their live performance with ease, pushing the intensity and beauty into every track. It makes you want to dance, cry, and even speak a little French which creates an all around great album! These girls are all extremely talented and if I were a betting man, which I am, I would bet that Hot Cha Cha will be going places very soon!
